But first of all, who is Dr. Perricone? And why are some of the companies promoting acai berry so eager to get his name associated with their brand? Dr. Nicolas Perricone is a practicing dermatologist and a New York Times best selling author of books on anti-aging and weight loss. He also researched and developed his own line of skin care products. Although he has had his share of criticism coming from peers who are not sold on his unorthodox approach to skin care and weight loss, he remains a highly-visible and credible health expert to ordinary consumers.
The truth is there is no such endorsement!
In his book, “The Perricone Promise,” Dr. Perricone lists acai as his number one superfood because of its high levels of antioxidants, anthocyanins, and healthy fats. When Oprah featured the book and had him on her show as a guest, that made people really sit-up and take notice of what was once a little-known berry fruit found only in the rainforests of the Amazon.
With the renowned doctor being a big fan of this “nutritious and powerful food” as he called it in his book, acai websites have been quick to generate publicity for acai, using attention-grabbing phrases like “Dr. Perricone’s number 1 superfood” and “As seen on Oprah.” And it certainly has helped that television networks have drummed up interest on the supposed acai benefits as well. Such media frenzy has contributed much to making the acai supplements business the $15-billion industry that it is today.
Obviously, Dr. Perricone would not classify acai as his top superfood for nothing.
